Pamela Arwig [SK001 Eins] (パメラ・アーヴィヒ, Pamera Aavihi, last name pronounced "Arvick") is a Dark Magus and the captain of the witch-hunting organization of Schwarzkreuz appearing in Rosenkreuzstilette ~Freudenstachel~. She was secretly trained as a royal knight to lead the organization as its High Commander, a title given to her by her superior, the Holy Empire's Pope, and is also addressed as Commander Arwig and titled as daughter of the noble House of Arwig. She is also a playable character and the main protagonist of her own side-game, Rosenkreuzstilette ~Weißsilber~.

Appearance[]

Pamela is dressed in a white, long-sleeved coat with dark red laces and a red ribbon on the collar and what appears to be shoulder pads with dark red laces and a red skirt, as well as black tights and brown boots. She has long, bright red hair with a laced hairband and magenta eyes. She uses a magical sword, known as the sacred blade Weißsilber, as her main weapon of choice, which, according to her during her fight against Grolla in ~Weißsilber~, is said to have slain many demons throughout the ages.

Character Profile[]

"I've been waiting for this! I will destroy you!"
—Pamela Arwig, Rosenkreuzstilette ~Freudenstachel~

A girl born of nobility, Pamela was secretly trained as a royal magic knight and is the High Commander of the organization of Schwarzkreuz who reports directly to the Pope. Her existence is kept a secret, as she was raised away from the public eye, and because of that, very little is actually known about her. As a result of her noble upbringing, she's a very straightforward and sensible person, but tends to be considered haughty and sanctimonius. She never doubts her views of justice and will convict those who do not share them, stopping at nothing to punish sinners and heretics alike. She does not believe herself to be a Magus, instead insisting that her abilities are miracles granted to her by God, and also often refers to Magi as witches. Pamela makes her home in Burkhardt Castle.

Abilities[]

Pamela wields the "Whitesilver" Weißsilber, a magical sword. Using it, she can draw a magic circle in the air and manipulate the space within it. As a result, many attacks are available for her use.

Pamela is in charge of the witch hunts done by Schwarzkreuz and the Holy Empire, regularly overseeing their operations. She first appears before Freudia Neuwahl after she defeats Eifer Skute for the first time, telling Eifer to stand down, and when Eifer pleads for her not to try to stop her, she reminds her that insubordination will not be tolerated. Pamela introduces herself to Freudia as High Commander of Schwarzkreuz and Right Hand of the Pope, and demands Freudia and RKS's surrender. Upon hearing Freudia's refusal, she expresses disappointment and accuses her of turning her back on the light and condemning her comrades to death, saying that God has no mercy for his enemies and that neither does Schwarzkreuz. Freudia asks Pamela if she thinks Schwarzkreuz is worth dying for, prompting her to state that there is no point in reasoning with a "magic-addled mind" before she leaves for the High Chapel alongside Eifer, who vows to kill Freudia later.

Later on, after Freudia defeated her comrades in the RKS, Pamela and the rest of Schwarzkreuz spy on Freudia with their viewing globe at the High Chapel. Pamela compliments Freudia for having made it that far, and all by herself, no less. While Schirach and Eifer argue over who should have the "fun match", Pamela tells the two that it doesn't matter who goes since Freudia is not going to be a match against either, thinking of her as a relic of the old ways and declaring that Schwarzkreuz would cleanse the "blasphemy" of the heretical scum that she considers Freudia to be.

When Freudia shows up at Burkhardt Castle, Pamela appears before Freudia, ready to fight. She welcomes her to Rhodenheim, which she considers the Empire's blessed holy land. While she states that she would have welcomed her with open arms, she voices her refusal to let her get past her, saying that witches as she calls the Magi are not permitted to "taint" her home. When Freudia comments on Pamela's magic, Pamela is offended that Freudia sees her as another Magus like the others in RKS. Pamela claims that she's been chosen by God and that her power is "His Will, granted by His Blessing", to deal with heathens as she calls Freu and her colleagues. Freudia considers it to be a convenient delusion, while Pamela replies that noble blood is noble blood, claiming Schwarzkreuz to be free of the commoners' "magic pandemic" save for the deviant Michael Zeppelin. She believes Freudia wouldn't understand due to "throwing her magic around mindlessly like children", stating that she was taught about the finer points of grace and discipline and authorized to put them to good use. Pamela voices Schwarzkreuz intent to "succeed where RKS has failed" and to secure peace, prosperity, and freedom in the name of the Holy Empire. Freudia accuses Pamela of siding with the Magi's oppressors despite sharing their abilities and sorrows and knowing their pain firsthand. Pamela tells Freudia that she should be honored to die by her blade, and the battle begins.

After the battle, Pamela receives a huge shock from her loss. She ponders how she could have lost to a "witch", while Freudia replies that perhaps her "grace" could afford to share some empathy and understand the pain she's helped to cause. Not expecting to suffer such a disgrace, Pamela leaves, red in the face and eyes. Strudel asks Freudia if she's going to go after her, and Freu replies that Pamela won't be able to fight effectively for a while due to pushing herself too far, and presses onward to continue her quest to save Spiritia Rosenberg.

If Pamela is saved for last after the rest of Schwarzkreuz is defeated, an angry Pamela states to Freudia that she's found her and admits to being impressed that a "lowborn witch" would defeat all of her colleagues. Freudia advises to Pamela that she noticed that the members of Schwarzkreuz don't seem to work together very well telling from her bickering with Eifer earlier, saying that it spared her some effort and asking whether the leader of the organization isn't up to the task. Pamela angrily growls and accuses Freudia of daring to insult her and interfering with Schwarzkreuz's cause, claiming that she and her colleagues were chosen by God. Freudia calls out Pamela on daring to oppose her own kind despite being a Magus, considering their cause to be a bad joke. Pamela replies that she believes noble blood is free of magic's "taint" save for Zeppelin, and says that the Pope saved her by keeping her hidden from the Magi, vowing to cleanse the "taint" once and for all for his salvation. Freudia expresses disgust that Pamela would choose to side with her oppressors. Pamela shouts at Freudia that she'll have the honor of dying by her hand, and the fight starts from there. The dialogue after the fight is mainly the same as if she was chosen at any time other than last. The difference is that at the end of the dialogue, Freudia also voices her relief that all of Schwarzkreuz has been defeated before saying that she and Strudel move on.

After all of the members of Schwarzkreuz are defeated, Pamela approaches Freudia at the High Chapel. Weakened by the previous battles, Freudia was in no mood to battle her, though Pamela refuses to let Freudia get away with harming her pride. Before they can fight, Eifer attacks and nearly kills Pamela and reveals to her shock and despair that the Pope is dead and that she and Iris Zeppelin were both responsible for the witch hunts. As Pamela loses consciousness, Freudia convinces Liebea Palesch, who was rescued by Kahl Palesch and came by with RKS to free the persecuted, to take care of Pamela, noting to Liebea that she is a Magus like the rest of them. Liebea understands and tells Freudia to leave her to her.

Rosenkreuzstilette ~Weißsilber~[]

Pamela Arwig, the captain of Schwarzkreuz, is holding a meeting between herself and her colleagues. She asks why their plans have been delayed, with Eifer replying that RKS has been interfering with their operations and Schirach commenting that it was a stupid plan to begin with. Pamela reminds her colleagues that their goal is to assert control over the Magi and guide them along the path of righteousness for the peace and prosperity of the Empire, stating that, while bloodshed may be inevitable, their cause is noble and just. She decides that it would be more time-efficient for her to defeat RKS all by herself in terms of putting down the Walpurgisnacht. The others don't trust her own plan, but Pamela reassures them that the Pope will be pleased if her mission is a success, reasoning that it'll serve to greatly accelerate their plans. She gives orders for Eifer, Recht, and Link to remain on guard duty and for Schirach to follow suit once she has captured Spiritia. She tells them not to worry, claiming that none of the Magi can hope to defeat her.

Pamela, on her way to Zuverberg, meets Freudia at Count Michael Zeppelin's Castle Grounds and demands for RKS to resign. Freudia refuses, leading Pamela to express disappointment and accuse her of "turning her back on the light" and condemning her comrades to death. Freudia asks Pamela whether she thinks Schwarzkreuz is really worth dying for, and Pamela replies that there's no point in reasoning with a "magic-addled" mind. Finding nothing further to discuss, she fights Freudia and wins. Freudia, deciding not to waste her time on the foolishness, escapes from Pamela. Initially angered at Freu's escape, Pamela immediately calms herself knowing she has other targets and decides to save her for last.

Pamela then begins to fight her way through the rest of RKS one by one. However, as she fights alone, her determination wanes as she sees what she didn't expect in RKS, such as the friendship between Zorne Zeppelin and Trauare Wrede, the weirdness, yet lack of malice of Schwer-Muta Casasola Merkle, and the camaraderie between the RKS members and their commander, Sichte Meister.

On Pamela's victorious way back to the church, the Refraktia sisters show up and inform Pamela, to her shock and disbelief, that she has been branded a traitor and heretic, exiled, and given excommunication by the Pope for "abandoning her post and turning her back on God" and is ordered to leave at once. Believing that a conspiracy is in the works, Pamela vows to seek out the truth through an audience with the Pope so that she can find and slay her vilifier.

As she searches for the person who smeared her name, Pamela began to enter battle with the remaining Schwarzkreuz members. Pamela is surprised that the Schwarzkreuz members could bring themselves fight her, provided that they were comrades just a few days ago. She is also told by Schirach that there is no such a thing as "morale" in Schwarzkreuz; the members each have their own secrets and goals that deviate from the holy image of Schwarzkreuz that Pamela had in mind, unbeknownst to her. Pamela nevertheless defeats all the members of Schwarzkreuz and asks them to join her in later days to reorganize a more honorable Schwarzkreuz that she intends to lead to glory herself.

After the fights, Eifer, appearing before Pamela on her way to the cloister to see the Pope, reveals that the real Pope was dead all along and that he was replaced by a homonculus posing as him. Iris then reveals herself before Pamela and revealed that she was the one manipulating everything and that she was the one who started the conspiracy against Pamela by having her punished with excommunication, reasoning that she couldn't resist wanting to tease her due to how proud she looked after defeating most of RKS. Pamela pities Eifer much to the latter's agitation, considering her to be just a soulless puppet despite looking human due to her being a homunculus, as well as considering her a sad little doll due to just following orders from Iris. Eifer argues that she's not a doll and that she chose to side with Iris. Pamela declares to both of them that, as High Commander of Schwarzkreuz, her duty has always been to defeat threats to the Empire regardless of whether they be members of RKS or pretenders to Heaven's throne. She tells Iris that even though she insulted Schwarzkreuz, she doesn't care anymore, declaring the old Schwarzkreuz dead and intending to start a new and more honorable Schwarzkreuz. Iris believes that Pamela has come down with a serious case of hubris but nevertheless invites her to partake in the "thrilling climax" of a show at the Iris Palace II. Pamela vows to enjoy making Iris pay for humiliating her, and Iris replies that she'll be looking forward to preparing a special front-row seat for her. After Eifer and Iris leave, Pamela comments to herself that she's been manipulated from the moment she left home to the instant that Iris revealed herself, admitting to being ashamed of herself for falling for Iris' lies, then proclaims that her strength is real and that she will regain her honor and the trust of her former comrades. Pamela declares her intent to show Iris that there is nothing fake about her sword or her pride. She then pursues Iris and charges into the Iris Palace II.

Mid-way through the palace, Pamela encounters Freudia, this time badly wounded by the Darkside Devil. Pamela initially appears horrified wondering what the abomination is, but immediately realizes that the monster is indeed Eifer herself and frees her before Eifer attempts to kill herself by overusing her magic. Pamela, like she did with the other Schwarzkreuz member, offered Eifer to join her one day in the formation of a truly honorable Schwarzkreuz, even though both of them were indeed fooled and used by Iris. Eifer leaves without an answer, leaving Pamela to curse her own ego and admit that she brought it all upon herself.

Deeper into the Palace, Pamela meets Iris, appreciating her invitation that she considers to be a celebration of her fresh start. Iris announces that she intends to deliver her to Heaven personally as her way of thanking and rewarding her for her entertainment. Pamela accuses Iris of losing herself in her power and pretending to be a god, while Iris replies that she nearly forgot how bothersome the "ignorant masses" can be, claiming to be the most powerful, most intelligent, and most adorable being of all in time and space and that her "divine radiance" shines brilliantly in everyone's eyes. A disgusted Pamela calls Iris a monster and accuses her of corrupting, deceiving, and murdering, saying that she cannot allow her to live. Iris laughs at such a "silly thing to say", considering defiance against her to be a cardinal sin but nevertheless says she'll try to be lenient and letting her know that the proper punishment is a one-way trip to Oblivion. Iris then unveils her Iris Machine II and Pamela destroys it, causing Iris to say that Pamela has some fight in her, as expected from someone who wields Weißsilber. She leaves, intending to start the climax, and Pamela follows her to the final arena.

There, Pamela meets Spiritia, much to her surprise, and finally learns Iris' real plan: Iris was planning to capture a huge number of Magi so she could steal their magic and use it to fuse with her in an attempt to create a new and complete reborn Rosenkreuz while also intending to modify Tia's face into her own. Iris believes that Pamela can recognize the difference in power between both of them and commands her to kneel before her and beg for forgiveness. Pamela defies the command, refusing to give up due to the promise she made to reclaim her standing, and tells Iris to prepare for God's judgment in the name of the reborn Schwarzkreuz. Pamela then proceeds to free Tia from Iris' possession before defeating Iris. Iris is left in shock and disbelief that her plans have failed and suffers a breakdown claiming that her power should be absolute. Although wondering why her sword even worked on Iris, and whether her transmigration was incomplete or something was trying to inhibit her power, Pamela openly mocks Iris for enjoying her criticism of her for her flaws, confessing to being a conceited, self-aggrandizing fool but nevertheless considers it all the more fitting that Iris would be defeated after the humiliation she gave her. Pamela then kills Iris with one final blow from Weißsilber, consuming her with an eruption of flames, before demolishing her palace.

Freudia then comes and meets Pamela, finding the unconscious Spiritia with her. Pamela reassures Freudia that Tia's only fainted, and Freu and Strudel both thank her for saving Tia, with Freu admitting that she never expected her to be the one to come to Tia's rescue. Pamela warns Freudia that she is nowhere near done with fighting RKS and that if they threaten the Empire or the Church again, she would go about bringing their downfall. Freudia then leaves, taking Spiritia back home with her. Pamela finally relaxes herself, despite feeling jealous that Freu and Tia's friends are waiting for them and no one is waiting for Pamela. She decides that she has another mission to accomplish for the time being, saying that she'll have to start from scratch but will rebuild, declaring the beginning of a new Schwarzkreuz. Pamela then happily reunites with all the other members of Schwarzkreuz, Eifer included, who have been waiting for her.

Boss strategy[]

Pamela will create two magic circles and then disappear off the one in front of her before reappearing off the other magic circle, leaping forward and slashing with her sword before she lands. She'll fire two magic circles, one along the ground and one diagnally above the air, before hurling a fireball at Freu, as the two magic circles she fired home in on Freu herself. Pamela can also fire several energy swords at Freu in different directions, which Freu can avoid by jumping over them. Pamela may occasionally set herself ablaze and dash at Freu in a fireball-like state and may also leap up and then fire more sword beams from beneath herself, before creating two more magic circles and disappearing off the one closest to her and reappearing out of the other one. During Desperation Mode, while firing her homing magic circles, instead of hurling a fireball, she'll enlarge her Weißsilber and raise it high above her head, and upon swinging it, she'll release a large slash effect that travels across the screen. There is a small safe spot in the front of Pamela herself to avoid the large slash effect attack. And the flame dash attack would be used twice each time during Desperation Mode.

Her weakness is Weißteufel, which is learned from Sichte Meister. Although it doesn't slow her down, the daggers fired with Weißteufel still do significant damage to her.

Trivia[]

  • Pamela's designer, alphes, is also the illustrator for several of Twilight Frontier's Touhou fighting games and spin-off titles, such as Touhou 07.5 ~ Immaterial and Missing Power, Touhou 10.5 ~ Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Touhou 12.3, and MegaMari: Marisa no Yabou.
  • She is a nod to Adol Christin, the protagonist of the Ys franchise.
  • Similarly to Grolla Seyfarth in Rosenkreuzstilette ~Grollschwert~, Pamela also functions like Zero from the Mega Man X/Mega Man Zero series. The only difference is that she can fire projectiles upon using her third slash.
  • As a boss, one of Pamela's attacks that she creates two magic circles is similar to Awakened Zero's Shingetsurin attack (a pair of blue rings) in Mega Man X5. The giant slash effect attack during her Desperation Mode is also similar to one of Nightmare Zero's skills, Genmurei Kai, from Mega Man X6.
  • Pamela's pre-battle quote, "I will show you no mercy. Here I come!", is similar to the Colonel's own pre-battle quote, "I'll show you no mercy! Now, get ready!", in Mega Man X4.
  • Pamela and her playable role in ~Rosenkreuzstilette Weißsilber~ would later be paralleled to Copen from the Azure Striker Gunvolt franchise, more specifically his main timeline incarnation and its playable appearance in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, as he also has an association with the colors red and white, antagonizes a different form of humans with different powers (in his case, Adepts), and often mentions God in his sentences.
